Lesson: What are cognates and how can they help with language learning?
Topic Description: Students will collect English and Spanish cognates throughout the lesson and the school year.
Learning Goals:
Students will collect English and Spanish Cognates and their definitions and input data into a Google Form. This form will be used throughout the school year to be added to continuously as the class discovers more cognates during their learning. Each student group will input at least 3 entries to the Form. Students will analyze for correct information and sort by language within the sheet. Finally, cognates will be used in a sentence and typed within the sheet by student groups.

Lesson Framework
The lesson will begin whole class with students at small table groups. The teacher will point out that attendance needs to be taken and will inquire whom is absent, pointing out that ausente also means absent in Spanish.

- Class discussion/define cognates - teacher gives more samples
- Small table groups use the Google Form to turn in 3 or more cognates
- Explore the Spreadsheet side of the form, understanding layout of rows/columns - teach sorting to group by language
- Groups add vocabulary cognates in sentences for their neighboring group within the last column
- Encourage students to use the Google Form and sheet throughout the year to collect cognates (and eventually false cognates as well)
