Introduction: Students at the 2nd-grade level will spend a lot of time studying story structure and mapping story parts and elements. Students at my school will study story elements first in Spanish and then have to apply them in English Language Arts as well. This lesson will be a game based reinforcement of the content from SLA to ELA.
Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5 Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
Objectives:
Students will be able to answer questions based on story elements
Students will be able to create stories with correct story structure
Students will be able to analyze parts of a story and correctly identify a story structure map.
Materials:
laptops, headphones (1-to-1)
student notebooks (source books)
Learning Activities:
Reading Comprehension Story Structure - In this learning activity students read (or listen) to a story. After that they are placed in a classroom where a teacher and other students guide the learner through a series of activities and questions concerning the story.
What's the Story - Students choose from a variety of scenarios and then pick the elements to their story. It is digitally rendered at the end showing all of their choices to the who, what, where, when, why, and how elements of their story.
Story Starters Adventure - This is another choose your own story adventure activity, however, students spin and are provided with a story starting prompt. From here they digital create a story with a drawing and formatting based on their layout (i.e newspaper, letter, postcard) choice.
